Many years have passed since the famous historic day October 12, 1957, when with the decision of the Council of Ministers of the USSR in Voroshilovsk, LuhanskregionMining and Metallurgical Institutewas founded as the response for the urgent need of establishment ofthe higher educational institution in the province of coal, metal and machine-building.
Initiator of Institute establishment was the member of the VerkhovnaRada of Ukraine, the Director of P. A. GmyryaVoroshilovsky metallurgical plant.
Over the course of its history the University has changed its name several times: until 1962 the Institute was named Voroshilovsky, 1962 – as the result of the city renaming itgot the nameKommunarskiy and since 1992 – DonbassMining and Metallurgical Institute. Then only in 2004 the Institute received the title Donbass State Technical University.
Urgent priority issues were issues of creating conditions for the start of classes in the new high school. Part of the students during the establishment of the Institute was transferred to the open specialities of KharkivMining and Civil Engineering Institute, Dnepropetrovsk Metallurgical and Mining Institute.
At the same time the Institutemanagement team was formed – the Rector's Office, heads of faculties and departments of the Faculty of the same university in Kharkov and Dnepropetrovsk. The first Rector of the Institute was I.F. Kovalfrom the Dnepropetrovsk Metallurgical Institute, and his Deputy on educational and scientific work became Y.M.Voevodin from Kharkiv Mining Institute.
By order of the Ministry of higher education the old Universities shared theirpart of material basewith the new one. Many machines and new equipment right out of bases and depots passed to industrial enterprises of the area. Institute bought independentlymany items of the unique for that time equipment: x-ray machines, optical bench for the Physics Department, exclusive pressesfor 150 and 500 tons for the Department of Building Structuresand Materials Science, different instrumentation and tools.
Training was conducted at three faculties: mining, metallurgical and construction.
On the initiative of the Rector and some chairs the evening departmentwas openedin 1958, and in 1959 – correspondence course, 1960 – post-graduate studies and training courses. In the early 60s about 2.5 thousand studentsstudied at the Institute: at the full-time study department – almost 1500 students, at the evening and correspondence course department – more than 1000 students. Also the staffincreased: from 120 up to 223 teachers and another 63 teachers by the hour. The number of specialitieswas increased from 4 to 10. In 1959the new Rector of Y.M.Voevodinbecame responsible for the development of the Institute. He headed the Institute for more than two decades and put a lot of personal effort in its formation and development. In 1961 first 139 engineers-miners and builders received diplomas and in 1962 first engineers and metallurgists completed their study. The Institute was gradually expanding its field of activity. Thus in 1963 the Faculty of automation of production processes was founded, in 1964 – Mining and electromechanical, Electric Machine and Evening Faculties. Since February 1981 the University was headed by A.S. Lenovich, who worked as Pro-Rector of scientific workfor a long time. Under his leadership research design Institute "Parameter"was founded andthe sixth academic buildingwas built. The sixth building is an architectural complex with technical equipment that correspondsthe requirements of the modern higher education. The sixth academic building has the name of A.S. Lenovich.
In 1989, the staff elects V.M. Dorofeeva, Professor, honoured worker of education of Ukraineas the Rector of Institute. In 1991 DSMI opened an interdisciplinary faculty ofprofessional skillsimprovement, in 1992 the foreign economic relations department started its work, and 1993-Donbass regional training centre. In the 1995-1996 foreign students and postgraduates training was founded. As A.I. Akmaeva became theRectorthe revival and organization of the qualitatively new basis of economic faculty started (engineering-economic faculty was opened in 1972, and since 1992 it was renamed to the Faculty of Economics). On the initiative of the Rector A.I.Akmaevathe Faculty of management (2001) (a new one for theUniversity) was organized.New branches of DSTU– future engineering faculties wereactively opened. In 1999 5 firsteducational-advisory centres Yenakiyevskiy, Krasnoluchskiy, Lisichanskiy,Rovenkovskiy, Sverdlovskiythatsoonwere transformed into separated departments of the University. In future such branches were opened in DonSTU inKrasnodon (2000), Rubezhnyi (2004), Pervomaisk (2005). DonSTU is also one of the first universities of Ukraine which introduced the practice of educational process requirement of the Bologna Declaration.
